Comment:
I've lived about 70 miles from Red Wing all my life and I've collected Red Wing Stoneware and Dinnerware actively for about 55-years.
But in all those years, I had never seen even one piece of the "Colonnes" pattern until I happened upon these pieces about 40-years ago.
Note:
If you only want to buy a few pieces (mix & match pieces to satisfy my
minimum order of 0.00)
, please read my instructions located near the end of this listing
"How to buy Groups of Pieces".
Note:
It's interesting to note that the Red Wing Collector's Society Inc. features most of my photos of the pieces that you see here in their on-line identification questions & answers site - they obviously couldn't find pieces to photograph anywhere else. This further attests to the Rareness of this pattern! Using my photos i
s all right with me
(I was a member for many years when I was younger and
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT)
.
History:
I purchased these pieces at an Estate Sale many years ago in Red Wing. The previous owner had worked at the Red Wing Potteries Showroom when this pattern was made and indicated that in the short time in 1955 that it was made she never saw a single piece sell. When they closed out the pattern that year (because of lack of sales and the fact that the pattern required a lot of time to hand paint it), she bought all that they had because she figured it might be very scarce in the future. She carefully packed it all away and stored it in her basement - never to be used!
I've collected Red Wing Stoneware and dinnerware for 55-years and I've owned sets of nearly all of the hard to find/Rare patterns like Town & Country, Montmartre, Round-Up and many others.
When I started to search for pieces to see what they were selling for, I couldn't find any - not even at the largest matching services.
In my opinion and experience, I believe that the
"Colonnes"
pattern is the RAREST dinnerware pattern ever made by Red Wing.
Condition:
The base color of the dinnerware is off-white/cream colored.
All of the pieces are unused, naturally, some of the pieces have a small stacking scratch/mark (a mark caused by one piece rubbing on the piece beneath it while stored or packed away in storage) or factory flaw on, but very few.
There aren't any chips, cracks or other damage.
The glaze is smooth and glossy and the hand painted pattern is extremely well done and very bold.
Description:
My photos are good and I show the pieces that are listed, so I won't go on and on. The one thing that doesn't show in the photos is the light blue, pastel shading on the flowers.
The following description came from an ad in a Red Wing brochure in 1955:
Going back to the romance of ancient times, soft blue flowers and green foliage frame ancient stone columns in Red Wings elegant "Colonnes" pattern.
The French term "Colonnes" translates to "Columns" in English.
Another brochure reads:
"Colonnes", artistry of design and shape will bring true distinction to your dining table.
Classic Columns and demure flowers combine in tones of blue, subtle greens, and accents of black.
A distinctive, hand painted design with colors permanently sealed under the glaze.
"Coloness" is suitable for contemporary settings, as well as classic traditional decors.
Red wing Potteries introduced their "Futura" line of dinnerware in 1955 with exciting modern shapes.
Designed by Charles Murphy, the flatware pieces in the line are slightly ovoid rather than round and the serving pieces are slightly off-center.
