Miguel Meléndez:
Miguel began his career as a Taxco apprentice at William Spratling’s
Taller de las Delicias
where he was trained by Antonio Castillo. In 1940, he joined Los Castillo at its formation and was responsible for the development of enamelwork. When Margot van Voorhies Carr, “Margot de Taxco,” divorced Antonio and left Los Castillo in 1948 to establish her own workshop, Meléndez followed. Soon enameling on silver became the hallmark of Margot’s jewelry. While managing her shop, he also created work of his own, finding inspiration for his silver jewelry designs in nature and in motifs taken from pre-Conquest clay seals. The workmanship on Meléndez pieces is highly praised by experts and he is considered as one of the Masters in the art of Silver Repoussé as well as Enamel-on-Silver. Meléndez signs his work with an M encircled by a C and his Taxco registration mark is TM-18.
