SERGIO SCH TAXCO MEXICAN MODERNIST RATTLESNAKE BOLO 1960'S VINTAGE TUCSON ESTATE

Description

From a forgotten box in my office closet (and one of the earlier annual Old Fort Lowell Historic Neighborhood Antiques Sales) is this 1960's or so Taxco modernist silver bolo with fanged rattlesnake decor - of Mexican mid century aesthetic and skillfully done. The ornament is in fact from the artisanal workshop of Sergio (SCH), a referenced maker of those times. The stylized reptile exhibits plenty of visual charisma and resides on a bordered triangular oxidized silver slide plate - black woven cords with  weighty streamlined silver cord tips balance things nicely. The older Taxco silversmiths delighted in occasionally crafting such unique interpretations for visitors from the American southwest, sometimes resulting in striking wearable artworks as this. The well designed silver friction fitting to the slide back has the "Sergio" signature in script, along with "STERLING / SCH / TAXCO / HECHO EN / MEXICO / (1950's / 1960's era second national eagle assay mark with '3' on chest for Taxco)". Weight is good for the form at about 25.6 gross grams on my portable digital scale. Condition is quite fine with an aura of time to the silver surfaces. The silver slide ornament shows some typical minor tonal oxidation / wear to the blackened finish. I have avoided any urge to refresh or "improve" - you want that done, you do it.  The silver friction fitting works exactly as it should and those original silver cord tips are well preserved. The woven neck cord is also nice, making this pretty much ready for that next occasion. All signs of previous neck duty and decades in a drawer simply validate the history. A look at those pics should give a good idea of appearance and condition. Size of the slide is about is about  1 19/32 in. horizontal and 1 1/4 in. vertical. The silver cord tips are about 1 7/16in. long. If you are partial to genuinely vintage Mexican silver and and are aware there are none of these at the mall, or simply wish a single very cool upgrade to the ambiance of each day, this will have great meaning for you.
