    Description

This large green Stoneware pitcher (or lidded container/beverage server)  was made by Red Wing Potteries in the mid century. See NOTE below about this line of Red Wing called Butter Mold.
Very mid century modern in design but larger than most pitchers. Has the butter mold design on the side and on the bottom that Ernest Sohn used for this pattern. Has a dark green glaze on the outside but an ivory interior. It is on the hefty side as it is tall, and a larger sized piece of stoneware.
Measures approx. 11" tall to top of knob on the lid. The pitcher alone is about 10" tall. The top opening has an approx. 5" diameter. Base has an approx. 6" diameter.
A repair was made to the knob on the lid that can be seen upon close inspection - see photo. Bottom has wear commensurate with vintage age. Price reflects these conditions.
It is marked on the bottom E.S. USA with the hallmark of a fern and leaf inside rings that Ernest Sohn took from an old butter mold and used for his hallmark stamp on his pieces. Has a chip.
    NOTE:
Ernest Sohn was a famous designer who specialized in serving pieces and buffet sets. He produced at least two lines with Red Wing pottery.
"Butter Mold" is the most well known of these lines. Most Butter Mold pieces were dark brown, dark green, or yellow and were marked with a design taken from a vintage butter mold. This design featured a fern and leaves enclosed by 5 rings, and included the letters " E.S. USA". Production took place between the late 1950s and early 1960s.
